Garnet is the traditional birthstone for the month of January and may be given as a gem on the 2nd and 6th wedding anniversary. Most commonly found in round, oval, and cushion cuts; this versatile gem comes in a variety of colors. Garnet comes from the Latin word, "granatus" which means grain. That is because many garnet deposits are small grains of red crystals in or on their host rock, reminiscent of the seeds of a pomegranate. Garnet is not artificially enhanced in any way.
